This post offers an opportunity to work within one of the most innovative and successful self-help initiatives for homeless people.
Using a company vehicle, you will be responsible for distributing magazines to Big Issue vendors in the South East, encouraging vendors to maximise their sales and personal potential, whilst promoting the support services available.
You will be responsible for cash-handling and reconciliation, magazine stock control and ensuring sales targets are met. You will need to be able to work on your own initiative, have excellent communication skills and the ability to work under pressure. You will be actively recruiting new vendors, administering pitches and promoting good relations with the general public, including ensuring the vendor Code of Conduct is adhered to and responding to complaints. You will be liasing with local councils, police, homeless organisations and other relevant local bodies, to build relationships and develop selling opportunities for vendors.
It is essential for applicants to have experience in sales and cash-handling and the ability to keep accurate and detailed records. You must have a flexible approach, be extremely organised and motivated, and have a full, clean driving licence. An understanding of the practical and emotional needs of homeless people is advantageous and a commitment to the social objectives of The Big Issue is essential.
